I would be remiss if I did not showcase John Hicks’ inspiring responsive web design for his own company’s website, Hicksdesign

By my count, there are 5 if not more @media queries modifying the layout as the browser is resized. John also uses the responsive typesetting technique used by Ethan Marcotte & Andy Clarke

A responsive mind by Jeremy Keith

A must-read if you are learning about responsive web design. It has some great insights about the whys & wherefores of responsive web design:

That’s the thing about responsive web design: you can’t just think of it as a sprinkle of pixie dust that can be applied to any site. It requires the right mindset. It requires that sites be built on solid foundations of best practice. If those foundations are in place—a flexible layout, flexible images, optimised performance—then responsive web design can work its magic.

Information Architects have created a great responsive site. While not using a fluid grid, this site has no less than 5 separate layouts depending on the browser/screen width you are viewing the site with.

Ethan Marcotte designed this simple site for author, Garret Keizer. It is a great example of responsive web design.

What is Responsive web design?

There are others more qualified & more eloquent than me that can describe what responsive web design is all about, none more so than Ethan Marcotte who recently summed it up very nicely:

A responsive design is composed of three distinct parts:

  1. A flexible grid.
  2. Flexible images. Or more specifically, images that work in a flexible context (whether fluid themselves, or perhaps controlled via overflow).
  3. Media queries. The final layer of a responsive design, media queries optimize the design for different viewing contexts, and that spot-fix bugs that occur at different resolution ranges.

Responsive Web Design

Hi, I’m Zander Martineau. You may remember me from such sites as CSS3 Watch, jQuery Style & my blog, Rather Splendid.

I have created this site to collect items related to responsive web design & all that it entails. From links, to tutorials & from snippets to real examples of sites using this technique.

I would like this to be a useful resource, so if you think that the site is missing something, please email me, or submit a new post using the link provided.
